National Bureau of Investigation presented, on Thursday, the arrested members of a hacking syndicate who were believed to be responsible for Philippine Navy and COMELEC data breach incident in 2016.
The arrest of “NEWBIEXHACKER” in Tagaytay City last July 8 prompted the arrest of the two accused. The NBI discovered that “NEWBIEXHACKER” is in possession of a file that is code-protected and contains sensitive information which was breached from the database of the Philippine Navy. The hacker eventually disclosed that the data was sent to him by “HAXINJA”, who has access code for the said data as well.
An entrapment operation was conducted after the NBI confirmed that “HAXINJA” possess the pass code to access a Philippine Navy file. NBI-Cybercrime Division (NBI-CCD) supervised an established communication between a confidential informant and “HAXINJA” to collaborate for a project called “E-Commerce Website”. The hacker mentioned that he can provide the pass code during a meeting on July 16 in Cagayan de Oro city.
Following his arrest, another hacker was apprehended by the CCD in Quezon City, “D4rkJ1n”, who attempted to flee on a motorcycle.
NBI Director Jaime Santiago applauded the efforts of the NBI operative against cybercrime. He also assured the public that NBI will continue to be committed in ensuring the security and integrity of the nation’s “critical system”, and in bringing cybercriminals to justice.
