The United Broiler Raisers' Association (UBRA) predicts that more people will go into poultry farming.
Atty. Elias Jose 'Bong' Inciong, chairperson of UBRA, made the prediction on Wednesday, July 17, after the market price of chicken went up to as high as Php 250 per kilo in Metro Manila.
"Kapag mataas ang presyo, marami ang sasali," Inciong said during DZRH's Magandang Umaga Pilipinas.
Inciong explained that the recent price spike resulted from many poultry breeders and broilers stopping operations due to losses that they incurred since 2023.
"Mababa ang farm gate talaga. Ang pinaka-maswerte mo diyan ay tabla o kita ng kaunti. Maraming nalugi," Inciong shared.
Meanwhile, Inciong warned the National Economic and Development Authority from bringing down tariff rates in order to increase the amount of imports, and reduce the market price of chicken products.
Inciong fears that such an intervention by NEDA could extend the problem.
"Tatagal iyan kasi yung gaganahan sana dahil tumaas yung presyo ay mag-iingat. Ganyan ang nangyari sa baboy," Inciong stressed.
