The Philippines fell short of advancing to the semifinals of the 2023 FIBA Women's Asia Cup.
Gilas Pilipinas Women dropped out of contention for the title after losing to New Zealand, 83-78, on Friday, June 30, at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre in Australia.
Afril Bernardino, and Jhazmin Joson each scored 15 points while Jack Animam finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Philippine national women's basketball team.
Gilas Pilipinas Women managed to recover from a 10-point deficit and grab the lead, 50-45, at the start of the third quarter.
In the final period, Charlisse Leger-Walker and Tera Reed made back-to-back buckets for New Zealand to regain the lead, 72-69.
A three-point basket by France Cabinbin allowed the Filipinas to tie the score, but a lay-up by Leger-Walker and two free throws by Reed gave the lead, 76-72, to New Zealand for good.
Leger-Walker registered 34 points, and Reed chipped in 23 points for the victory of the Kiwis.
