The Gabriela Women’s Party strongly condemned the misogynistic remarks made by lawyer Ferdinand Topacio directed at party-list Representative Sarah Elago during the first week of Women’s Month.
In an official statement, the Gabriela said Topacio “grabbed the opportunity to unleash vulgar and offensive statements against a women’s sector representative in Congress.” The party criticized his comments as part of a long-standing pattern of disrespect and harassment toward women.
“This kind of behavior is unacceptable, and those who use their profession to attack women fighting against abuse and corruption should not be allowed to continue,” the statement read.
Gabriela emphasized that Topacio’s actions reflect deeply ingrained misogyny and undermine the rights and dignity of women in public service.
The party also indicated that it is exploring possible legal action to hold Topacio accountable.
“This cannot be tolerated, and it should not be ignored,” the statement added.
Observers note that the incident comes at a sensitive time, coinciding with the celebration of Women’s Month in the Philippines, highlighting ongoing issues of harassment and gender-based attacks against women in leadership and advocacy roles.
Gabriela’s statement underscores the broader call for gender respect and accountability in public discourse, particularly toward women who champion women’s rights and anti-corruption initiatives in government.
