The House of Representatives formed a new joint committee to investigate the issues of smuggling and price manipulation in basic goods and essential commodities.
According to the House, the formation of the Quinta Committee is aligned with House Bill No. 2036, which was adopted on September 25. It was approved in the Congress' final session before they went on recess.
The five panels are composed of the following: The House Committee on Ways and Means; Trade and Industry; Agriculture and Food; Social Services; and the Special Committee on Food Security.
They will be conducting joint inquiries focused on smuggling, price manipulation of basic goods and essential commodities, as well as curbing hunger.
The resolution permits the panel to conduct their inquiries in aid of legislation. Additionally, conducting hearings on such will allow officials to quicken the process of coming up with specific solutions to the issue.
Quinta-Comm aims to form a comprehensive report on the pressing challenges faced by the sector; With its primary target focused on curbing hunger and improving food and security in the country.
Once hearings are finalized, the panel will draft a report on their proposed measures to address the said challenges.
