Vice President Sara Duterte has spoken out against her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest, calling the government’s compliance with the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), “oppression and persecution,” against not only a Filipino citizen, but one of its own former presidents.
Sara Duterte declared in a statement released Tuesday evening, that the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) intervention was an insult to Philippine sovereignty.
“This is a blatant affront to our sovereignty and an insult to every Filipino who believes in our nation’s independence,” she said.
“Worse, former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is being denied his fundamental rights. Since he was taken this morning, he has not been brought before any competent judicial authority to assert his rights and to allow him to avail of reliefs provided by law,” she added.
Sara Duterte claimed the former president is set to be flown to the Hague, in the Netherlands, tonight.
“This is not justice—this is oppression and persecution,” she said.
She claimed surrendering Duterte meant the administration was not only “willing to abandon” one of its citizens to foreign entities, but is also ready to “betray” the nation’s sovereignty and dignity.
