The legal team of former President Rodrigo Duterte has asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) to indefinitely adjourn all legal proceedings against him, citing his alleged cognitive impairment.
In a 13 page document, Atty. Nicholas Kaufman stetd that the former president is “no longer fit to stand trial” as he can no longer remember places, events, and even members of his own family and defense team.
Kaufman added that Duterte is unable to comprehend the reason for his detention, raising questions about his competency in facing trial for crimes against humanity linked to the bloody war on drugs during his administration.
The ICC was originally set to hold the confirmation of charges hearing on September 23, but the proceedings have been deferred following Duterte’s legal team’s manifestation of his medical condition.
