The Bureau of Immigration (BI) cautioned foreigners against participation in local demonstrations ahead of the national and local elections on Monday, May 12.
“Foreigners are welcome guests in the Philippines, but they must respect our laws and refrain from interfering in any political exercise,” BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado.
In a May 11 press release, Viado delineated what the restriction entailed and its possible consequences.
“Foreign nationals are prohibited from joining rallies, campaigns, or any political gatherings. These actions may be grounds for deportation. Such participation is a violation of Philippine immigration policies, which bar foreign involvement in political activities,” he warned.
Furthermore, foreigners could also face visa cancellation, blacklisting, besides deportation.
While the BI, in cooperation with law enforcement and election agencies, is presently monitoring for potential violations, the agency also encourages citizens to report offenses through their official Facebook page.
