Sixteen individuals died due to floods and landslides caused by the the northeast monsoon and the trough of the low pressure area (LPA) in Mindanao, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) spokesperson Director Edgar Posadas reported on Monday, February 5.

Posadas told DZRH in an interview that 554 barangays have been affected by the flooding and landslides.

“Out of 554 [affected] barangays, 317 sa area ng Davao. Ito ay 129,000, almost 130,000 na pamilya at a little over almost 527,000 individuals,” he said.

The NDRRMC added nearly 23,000 families or 87,000 individuals are temporarily taking shelter in 329 evacuation centers in Mindanao. Most evacuees, he said, are from Davao region.

According to NDRRMC’s report yesterday, the northeast monsoon, commonly known as amihan, and the LPA resulted in flooding and landslides in some parts of the province, resulting in casualties that were undergoing validation.

Meanwhile, three individuals were reported missing while 11 were injured.

“Karamihan [ng fatalities] either nalunod sa baha or natabunan ng landslide,” Posadas said.

The NDRRMC spokesperson added they were adapting to the changes in environment, especially in the face of disaster.

“Natuto rin tayo sa mga ganito. We have to adapt sa changing na mukha ng disaster.”
