The average life expectancy of Filipinos has reached 72 years, according to Usec. Lisa Grace Bersales, Executive Director of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD).

In an interview on Special on Saturday, Bersales noted that the increase in life expectancy is a significant factor contributing to the continued growth of the Philippine population. Women have a longer life expectancy, averaging 78 years, while men average 71 years.

Bersales attributed the rise in life expectancy to advancements in technology, particularly in the medical field, which have improved diagnosis, treatment, and overall health care accessibility. She emphasized that preventive health practices, such as annual check-ups, as well as better lifestyle choices, also play a role in extending life.

The gap in life expectancy between men and women, Bersales explained, is largely due to higher-risk behaviors among men, including a greater likelihood of fatal accidents, especially road accidents, among the youth.

“Better health systems, improved treatments, and more Filipinos seeking medical attention earlier have all contributed to this increase,” Bersales said.

“While the average life expectancy was about 60 years in the 1960s, it has now risen to 72 years, which reflects the progress in healthcare and awareness.”

As the Philippines continues to grow—projected to reach 124 million by 2035 according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)—longer life spans, along with continued fertility among women, remain key drivers of population growth.
