A 68-year-old Filipino who is based in US was among the 11 people killed in the Lunar New Year massacre inside a dance parlor in Monterey Park, California over the weekend.
This was confirmed by the Philippine Consulate in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
In a statement, the consulate identified the victim as Valentino Alvero. They also expressed their "shock and great sadness over the mass victims."
"Our prayers go out to the families of the victims and we mourn with them during this lunar new year festival, which is supposed to be a time of gathering and celebration," the consulate said.
In a report from Reuters, a man fatally shot 10 people and injured at least 10 others at a ballroom dance hall during a Chinese Lunar New Year celebration late on Saturday near Los Angeles before fleeing the scene.
Video taken by local news media after the shooting showed injured people, many of them appearing to be middle aged, being loaded into ambulances on stretchers.
Monterey Park is around 7 miles (11 km) from downtown Los Angeles. About two-thirds of its residents are Asian, according to U.S. Census data, and the city is known for its many Chinese restaurants and groceries.
Authorities identified the gunman as Huu Can Tran, a 72-year-old Chinese immigrant with a limited criminal history, including an arrest in 1990 for unlawful possession of a firearm.
He was described as having an interest in dance and a hot temper.
Authorities has yet to determine his motive in the mass killing.
