Kaila Napolis snagged the first gold medal of the Philippines after she went undefeated in the women's jujitsu newaza GI - 52 kilograms event.
Napolis, who won a silver medal during the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines, bested Jessa Khan of Cambodia in the finals on Thursday, May 4, a day before the official opening of the biennial multi-sports event.
Before the day ended, Angel Gwen Derla seized the gold medal in the women's kun bokator single bamboo shield form event.
Derla topped the event with a score of 8.4992 while hometown bet Chanchhorvy Puth bagged the silver medal with a score of 8.4658, and Deslya Anggraini of Indonesia settled for a bronze medal after registering a score of 8.4158.
Aside from the two gold medals, the Philippines also snagged two silver medals, and three bronze medals on the eve of the 2023 SEA Games opening ceremony.
