The Philippines earned the first win and the first goal of the country in the FIFA World Cup.
Sarina Bolden made the header that allowed the Philippine national women's football team to beat New Zealand, 1-0, on Tuesday, July 25.
History happened at the 24th-minute mark of the match in the Wellington Regional Stadium in New Zealand after Sara Eggesvik managed to find Bolden in front of the goal.
While defended by three players of New Zealand, Bolden managed to bounce the ball at the palms of goalkeeper Victoria Esson and deliver the maiden goal of the Philippines
At the 70th-minute mark, Hannah Wilkinson almost tied the game for New Zealand but her goal was ruled out due to her being offside.
Grace Jale also had a chance to deliver an equalizer for New Zealand but goalkeeper Olivia McDaniels deflected the ball away from goal, and the Philippines walked away with the win.
The Filipinas now have one win and one loss in the 2023 FIFA World Cup.
The Philippines will seek to secure another victory, and book a spot in the next round of the tournament when they face Norway on Sunday, July 30.
