The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup campaign of the Philippines began with a 2-0 loss at the hands of Switzerland on Friday, July 21, in Dunedin, Zealand.

A penalty kick by Ramon Bachmann allowed Switzerland to take a 1-0 lead going into the second half.

The Philippine national women's football team dropped to a 2-0 hole after Swiss forward Seraina Pubel managed to get the ball past goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel at the 64th-minute mark.

The Filipinas will seek to make a comeback and grab their first win in the tournament when they face New Zealand on Tuesday, July 25, in Wellington.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Football Federation assured that the members of the national team remain safe after a shooting incident happened in Auckland, New Zealand prior to the start of the World Cup.

Per reports, at least two people perished and five others suffered injuries due to the shooting incident.

"All members of the Philippine Women's National Team delegation at the FIFA Women's World Cup are safe," read the Twitter page of the Philippine National Women's Football Team.

Authorities also found the shooter, identified as a worker at a construction site, dead after running amok.
