With the arrival of imported onions, the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) said that farmers were suffering from low farmgate prices.
From its soaring price of P600 per kilo, white onions were now sold from P70 to P90 per kilo.
“This is in Bongabon area in Nueva Ecija. Red onions, on the other hand, is now at P170 to P190 per kilo,” SINAG president Rosendo So said in an interview.
Likewise, the incomes of farmers have been affected by oversupplied tomatoes priced as low as P7 per kilo.
In an interview at DZRH Magandang Umaga Pilipinas with Angelo Palmones, Nueva Vizcaya Governor Carlos Padilla blamed the lack of cold storage facility for tomatoes.
"Ngunit ito'y pang sibuyas, tama lang sa consumption ng sibuyas. At maaaring 'yung features niya ay pang sibuyas lamang," said the governor.
However, these cold storages were currently not operational due to loss of capital.
