Former President Benigno 'Noynoy' Aquino IIII has died peacefully in his sleep due to renal disease secondary to diabetes, his sisters confirmed on Thursday afternoon, June 24.
In a statement read by Pinky Aquino-Abellada, the family revealed how the former leader, who is popularly known as PNoy, has been 'in and out' of the hospital for medical treatment even before the COVID-19 pandemic started.
She said Aquino died in his sleep at 6:30 AM on Thursday.
The Aquino family composed of Pinky and her other sisters Ballsy Aquino-Cruz, Victoria Elisa Aquino-Dee, and Kris Aquino released their official statement hours after multiple sources confirmed the passing of PNoy hours after he was rushed to the Capitol Medical Center in Quezon City.
The only son of the late President Corazon Aquino and Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. was elected as the 15th President of the Philippines on June 30, 2010, succeeding Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
In the same statement, Pinky acknowledged the medical staff who attended to their brother while also protecting his privacy in regard to his medical treatments.
"Naramdaman namin bilang mga kapatid niya that they did everything to make him comfortable. They became compassionate friends who gave him true respect by valuing and protecting his privacy," she said.
