Former president of the University of the Philippines (UP) Emanuel Valdez Soriano, passed away on Saturday at the age of 87.
Beginning on Saturday, the UP administration ordered all Philippine and UP flags on its campuses to be flown at half-staff until May 2.
Funeral rites will be held in his honor this week, with specifics to be disclosed shortly, according to current UP president Angelo Jimenez.
Soriano was the UP president from 1979 to 1981, succeeding Dr. Onofre Corpuz.
He was a known supporter of then-President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., but in 1983, the year Sen. Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. was slain, he published an open letter in the Business Day newspaper demanding the strongman quit.
He also wrote several books and papers on Asian business policy and management. He was named one of the UP College of Engineering's 100 Outstanding Alumni.
