Former President Rodrigo Duterte extended his congratulations to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump following Trump’s victory over electoral opponent Kamala Harris in the recent presidential election.
"I extend my warm congratulations on your election as President of the United States of America," Duterte said in a letter on Wednesday.
"I hope your new mandate will bring renewed optimism and strength to the American people during these challenging times," he added.
Duterte also conveyed his anticipation for the success of Trump's administration and a shared aspiration for greater peace and prosperity between their countries.
Trump, 78, reclaimed the White House on Wednesday, surpassing the 270 Electoral College votes needed to secure the presidency. His victory in the key swing state of Wisconsin pushed him over the threshold.
In addition to Trump’s win, Republicans gained a majority in the U.S. Senate, while control of the House of Representatives remains contested, with Republicans currently holding a narrow majority.
Duterte and Trump had a generally friendly relationship, marked by mutual admiration and similar political styles, especially in their approach to governance and controversial statements.
Both leaders shared a "strongman" persona, openly criticized traditional political establishments, and emphasized nationalist policies, which created a unique rapport between them despite some significant policy differences.
