Former Marikina Mayor and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chief Bayani Fernando died on Friday, September 22. He was 77 years old.

In a report by RH Sherwin Alfaro, Fernando’s wife confirmed that the latter had passed away.

The former MMDA chief was rushed to the hospital after he accidentally slipped from the roof of their house.

According to RH Edwin Duque, the Quirino Memorial Hospital in Quezon City confirmed that Fernando’s remains were brought to the funeral by his family at around 3:06 PM.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the management of MMDA said it was “saddened and shocked about the sudden demise” of its former chairman.

“A man of few words, Fernando is known to be a workaholic and a disciplinarian among MMDA employees,” it said.

According to the agency, the former chairman left a remarkable legacy as he was behind the rapid bus lanes and the "Metro Gwapo" campaign.

“A mechanical engineer by profession, Chairman Fernando used scientific and practical approaches in his quest to solve the problems of Metro Manila,” MMDA said.

“Thank you very much for your contributions. Rest now, Sir, for you already got the job done,” it added

Fernando served as MMDA chief from 2002 to 2006.
