Three individuals including a former mayor in Basilan were killed in a shooting incident at the Ateneo de Manila University on Sunday, July 24.
Initial report from the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) identified the fatalities as former Lamitan City mayor Rosita Furigay, her aide Victor George Capistrano, and university security guard Jeneven Bandiala.
Furigay was at the university to attend the Ateneo Law School graduation of her daughter, Hannah Furigay.
Hannah was wounded and rushed to the hospital.
Furigay’s husband Roderick is the incumbent mayor of Lamitan City.
Meanwhile, the university was earlier placed under lockdown due to the shooting but was later on canceled at 4 pm.
According to Supreme Court spokesperson Brian Keith Hosaka, Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo was supposed to be the guest speaker for the graduation and was still in transit when the shooting happened. He was advised to turn back and is safe.
Suspect arrested
Authorities immediately arrested the suspect, identified as Chao Tiao Yumol, 38, a resident of Lamitan City. He is currently in police custody.
Recovered from the scene was a caliber .45 pistol with a silencer.
According to the QCPD, the suspect has "personal motives" behind the killing.
"Ang suspect ay may mabigat na dahilan kung bakit niya nagawa ang krimen," QCPD director PBGen Remus Medina said in a press conference in Quezon City.
"Initially sa pagtatanong natin sa kanya, meron na silang long history ng away sa Lamitan, Basilan. According to them, nagpapalitan na sila ng kaso, itong si doktor naman ay lagi itong nape-pressure sa pamilya ng Furigay, so lumalabas personal ang away nila," Medina added.
