ERC to complete probe on Western Visayas massive blackout within 6-8 weeks
by Mary Antalan06 January 2024

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) said on Saturday, Jan. 6, that it will be completing the investigation into the massive blackout that occurred in Western Visayas, particularly on Panay Island, Guimaras, and Iloilo City within 6–8 weeks.

Interviewed in DZRH's "Adbokasiya," ERC Chairperson Atty. Monalisa Dimalanta said that determining the main cause of the power outage will prevent it from happening again.

"Kasi po ERC naman yung nakatokang tignan yung mga... all the way down to the technical details, pero saan po ba talaga nagkaroon ng problema? Kasi po kung hindi natin matutunton, ito po yung importante dito, which is, on the time we're alarmed with the DOE po, kailangan makita natin saan talaga yung problema," Dimalanta said.

According to the chairperson, not only the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) will be the one to be investigated but also the generating companies.

"Importante na makita lahat ng impormasyon, makita natin lahat ng rules ng both parties during that crucial period of time, the 2-hour widow and then actions. Kasi po kung hindi natin makikita 'yan malamang mauulit na naman ito," said Dimalanta.

She said that the power plants of the generating companies were released, so it should be known if there was a problem with them.

In April last year, the ERC conducted an investigation for six weeks regarding the power outage that also occurred on Panay Island.
