On Friday, environmental activist, Francisco “Eco” Dangla III filed a petition for a Writ of Amparo and Habeas Data before the Supreme Court (SC).
In Dangla’s petition, he asked the court to grant him, his kin and his witnesses a temporary protection order. Following his abduction in March, Dangla filed the petition on the same day as the International Day of the Disappeared.
On the day of his filing, human rights protestors rallied at the Supreme Court, calling for justice on the “desaparecidos” or the disappeared.
Dangla and one other activist were abducted in the Pangasinan province and claimed to have been tortured by interrogators. At the time of their capture, they were questioned about their work and affiliations, even citing their link to the New People’s Army. They were later found bruised.
Anyone whose life, liberty, and security are violated or threatened may file for a Writ of Amparo, while those violated by entities who are gathering data or information on them may file for a Writ of Habeas Data.
