“What a pathetic and ghastly irony!” This was Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile's description of his evident dismay over the alleged lawbreakers who are now “in their desperate distress.”
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, March 18, Enrile pointed out the ironies he observed in the actions from former President Rodrigo Duterte’s camp.
“Those who allegedly committed unwarranted and violently acts of injustice are now drowning and gasping for justice,” Enrile wrote in his post.
Lamenting the outcome, Enrile emphasized that they are now blaming everyone else, except for themselves.
“In their desperate distress, they grasp at straws for help and called for widespread national prayer rallies to a God they called "STUPID!!!" They blame nearly everyone else--except themselves--for their miseries, which they themselves created because of their lust, arrogance, hubris, and hunger for power and pelf,” he added.
During his term as president, Duterte once called God “stupid,” a complete reversal of the prayer rallies initiated by his supporters.
He continued, “They now claw for whatever support and sympathy and support they could muster to extricate themselves from the tight legal trap that they themselves dug for themselves. Karma!! Abra cadabra!! What a tragic miscalculation!!!”
Earlier this month, an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) was issued against Duterte. On the day of his arrival from Hong Kong, he was apprehended by the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and was taken into custody at the Villamor Air Base.
He was later flown to The Hague, Netherlands. On March 14, he appeared before the ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber I for the first time via a video link. He was accompanied by his legal counsel and former Executive Secretary Atty. Salvador Medialdea.
