France and Pablo Ruiz, the employers of the allegedly abused domestic house helper Elvie Vergara, were both detained in the Senate on Monday for purportedly lying and giving false testimonies.
The decision comes after the members of the Senate Justice and Human Rights Committee concluded that the Ruiz couple was giving false answers at the lie detector test about how they treated Vergara, who served as their house helper.
NBI Polygraph Examiner Eddie Betervo, who conducted some of the tests, said the result of Ruiz's test indicates lying.
Senator Jinggoy Estrada seconded the motion made by Senator Raffy Tulfo, which was approved by committee chairmen Senator Francis Tolentino.
Vergara's abuse came to light after a post went viral on social media, showing her several injuries after years of alleged mistreatment.
Ruiz and her family were accused of torturing Vergara to the point that the victim was blinded due to her injuries. However, the couple repeatedly denied the allegations.
