The renowned Filipino pole vault EJ Obiena secured his spot in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
Obiena, who currently holds the Asian record, achieved a height of 5.82 meters during the BAUHAUS-Galan leg of the Diamond League in Stockholm, Sweden.
This successful clearance earned him a coveted spot in the upcoming Olympics.
The talented athlete needed two attempts to surpass the entry standard, displaying his skill and determination in the process.
While he aimed to clear 5.95 meters, he unfortunately fell short in his endeavor.
Male pole vaulters aiming to qualify for the Paris Games must achieve a minimum clearance of 5.82 meters between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024.
In addition to securing his Olympic qualification, Obiena finished in second place during the event.
He was narrowly bested by Olympic gold medalist Armand Duplantis, who achieved an impressive height of 6.05 meters.
Notably, Obiena recently defended his gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games held in Cambodia.
Moreover, he joined the prestigious six-meter club in pole vaulting by clearing the remarkable height of 6.0 meters.
Looking ahead, gymnast Carlos Yulo will also aim to secure qualification for the Paris Olympics through the World Gymnastics Championships scheduled for October.
