The onslaught of typhoon Egay resulted in damage and losses in the country’s agriculture sector at a value of around P53.1 million, based on Department of Agriculture's (DA) latest data.

According to DA's Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Operations Center report as of Thursday noon, 2,303 farmers had been affected by Egay, resulting in a loss of 1,871 metric tons (MT) of production.

The most recent data represented a sharp increase from the P255,000 in losses and damages reported as of 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26, which only included 40 hectares of rice fields and a 4 MT productivity loss.

Corn sustained the most damage, with 1,176 hectares impacted.

This resulted in a 1,837 MT volume loss, or a loss of P31.1 million.

Rice came in second with losses of P20.8 million after corn, and animals and poultry came in third with P1.2 million.

According to the DA, aid in the form of fingerlings, rice, corn, various vegetable seeds, and medications and biologics for livestock and poultry are currently available for delivery to affected farmers and fishermen.

Through the Agricultural Credit Policy Council's Survival and Recovery (SURE) Loan Program, those impacted may also apply for loans of up to P25,000.
