Eastern Samar was placed under a state of calamity due to continuous rainfall and massive flooding and landslides in the province.
Resolution No. 3 series of 2023 or resolution declaring a state of calamity in the province was signed by Vice-Governor Maria Caridad Sison-Goteesan and the members of Sangguniang Panlalawigan.
"The declaration of the province under a state of calamity is appropriate and proper in order to extend relief assistance to the affected families, providing them holistic support and to repair/rehabilitate the damage and affected areas," the order reads.
The latest data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), as of January 14, showed that a total of 49,753 individuals or 13,861 families were affected by the shear line, low-pressure area, and monsoon-induced rains in Eastern Visayas.
At least 267 individuals or 60 families are situated inside 4 evacuation centers while 31 individuals or 8 families are staying with their friends or relatives.
The NDRRMC also reported that 6 individuals perished amid heavy rains and floodings in Eastern Visayas.
