Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala made a strong statement in her 2026 campaign after securing her first victory at the WTA Linz Open, advancing to the Round of 16 with a straight-sets win on Wednesday, April 8 (Philippine time).
Eala defeated Austria’s Julia Grabher, 6-4, 6-3, in the Round of 32, showcasing composure and firepower against the hometown bet.
The 20-year-old Filipina displayed nerves of steel in the opening set, particularly in the pivotal 10th game. With Grabher, ranked world No. 89, threatening to level the match at 5-5 after gaining advantage, Eala responded with three straight points, capped by a sharp forehand winner to seal the set.
Carrying the momentum, Eala surged to a 4-1 lead in the second set and held off Grabher’s attempted rally to close out the match in one hour and 42 minutes.
“Hindi ko inakala na ang dami niyo dito sa Linz! Pero salamat sa pagsubaybay sa mga laban ko at magkita tayo tomorrow,” Eala said, acknowledging the crowd after the match.
With the win, Eala marches into the Round of 16, where she faces a tougher challenge against world No. 23 Jelena Ostapenko.
Despite the higher ranking of her next opponent, Eala holds a psychological edge, owning a 2-0 head-to-head record against Ostapenko on the WTA Tour. She previously defeated the Latvian star in both the Miami Open and the Eastbourne Open in 2025—tournaments where she also made deep runs.
Ostapenko, the tournament’s No. 4 seed, entered the competition with a first-round bye, setting up a highly anticipated clash against the rising Filipina star.
