The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is offering free rides to passengers who were unable to tap out at MRT-3 stations due to system errors encountered during the pilot run of cashless payments, starting Monday, August 4.
According to the DOTr, the agency and MRT-3 management will provide Single Journey Tickets (SJT) to affected passengers.
"This is in line with the President’s directive to implement immediate solutions to the concerns raised by MRT-3 passengers availing of the cashless payment system using debit/credit cards, QR codes, and NFC-enabled mobile devices," the department said.
The DOTr also noted that it has been closely monitoring the concerns of MRT-3 riders, particularly issues where passengers were charged the maximum fare of ₱28 due to system errors during tap-out at exit turnstiles.
As a remedy, affected passengers will be given a non-expiring SJT equivalent to the maximum MRT fare, which they can use for their next ride.
To claim the free SJT, passengers may proceed to any MRT-3 ticket booth and present proof of the failed tap-out transaction.
“Nagpapasalamat tayo sa overwhelming na suporta ng mga pasahero sa cashless payments natin sa MRT. Humihingi lang din tayo ng konting pang-unawa sa ilang mga problema ngayong pilot run, pero rest assured na within this August, dadami pa ang cashless turnstiles natin at tuloy-tuloy ang system upgrades para iwas-aberya,” said Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon.
