Following the extensive fire damage to the Manila Central Post Office, the Department of Tourism (DOT) pledged on Wednesday to assist in its repair.
Tourism Secretary Cristina Frasco stated in a public forum that the occurrence that sadly burned down the Post Office is a tragedy in terms of heritage and that it is such a cultural treasure that demands national attention and support.
She went on to say that their office was ready to follow through on the present administration's wishes for structure repair in order to respect the heritage significance.
The Post Office building was designated an Important Cultural Property (ICP) by the National Museum of the Philippines in 2018 for its "exceptional, cultural, artistic, and historical significance."
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Fire Protection said that the blaze destroyed an estimated P300 million in assets, including parcels, government IDs, documents, and paintings.
The fire originated in the basement of the building, in the general services office.
