The Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) teamed up to boost internet connection to 94 tourist spots in the country.
The memorandum was signed last Tuesday, Dec. 20, by Tourism and Technology secretaries Christina Garcia Frasco and Ivan John Uy, respectively.
“The [DOT] on Tuesday has formally signed a partnership with the [DICT] in a bid to introduce and further improve internet connectivity in 94 identified tourist destinations across the country and digitalize tourism services nationwide,” the agency said.
The deal aims to improve connectivity in lesser-known tourist spots.
“As a general rule, the quality of the internet in the Philippines can be improved still. Of course, we have our key destinations, like Cebu, Palawan, Boracay, Siargao and Bohol as well. We want to expand the quality of the internet in lesser-known destinations also so that we can equalize tourism promotion and development,” Franco said.
The two agencies believe that the improvement will attract “digital nomads” saying they can work in mountain resorts, beaches, and other tourist areas.
