The relationship between the Philippines and the United States (US) will remain stable, regardless of who wins the 2024 US Presidential Election, according to Philippine Ambassador to the US, Jose Manuel Romualdez.
US Presidential candidates Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are reportedly in a tight race as votes continue to be counted.
Romualdez expressed confidence that US foreign policy toward the Philippines would not significantly change regardless of the election outcome.
"Very confident ako na kung sino man manalo, pareho lang dahil ofcourse ngayon nakikita naman natin na yung admin ni President Biden na kasama si Vice President Harris, suportado tayo lalo na sa ating defense alliance," said Romualdez when asked about his views on the presidential election during a program on DZRH.
However, Romualdez believes that a Trump presidency might bring "slight" adjustments to the Philippine economy, particularly due to Trump's “America First” policy.
"Under economy under Donald Trump syempre meron siyang sinasabing America first so it means to say most of the businesses na gusto natin sanang magkaroon ng investment sa Pilipinas lalo na 'yung galing sa China na that are now moving out baka it will go down a little bit. Although yung relationship natin with US is very strong," said the Ambassador.
Romualdez also noted that, according to recent figures, the Philippines ranks among the top Asian exporters to the United States, following Vietnam, reflecting a strong economic relationship.
He added that the US remains interested in investing and doing business in the Philippines.
"Kahit sino ang manalo dahil alam mo sa negosyo may konting say ang gobyerno pero private entities they will go with what they think— dahil itong relationship natin sa US maraming interesadong businesses na gustong mag-open ng business sa Philippines," he said.
As initial election results come in, both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are securing key states. Each candidate needs at least 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.
