Looks like consumers have to save some dairy as prices for eggs are still blurry to decrease in the next 5 months.

Increased prices of eggs still remain even after the holidays due to shortage because of bird flu in Luzon.

In an interview with DZRH, Rosendo So, Chairman of Sinag, said most of the eggs sold in Metro Manila are from Region III.

So said that 1.8 million chickens were butchered leading to shortages in Central Luzon, as well as, in Bulacan and Pampanga, which were hit by the bird flu. For now, the suppliers are getting supply from northern and southern Luzon, and prices may remain blurry to decrease for the next 5 months.

He further explained that the problem is the Bird Flu that entered Central Luzon.

There is no testing for it and it has already spread in the area affecting caretakers who farm chicken, So added.

(We cannot import eggs because during the 5 days, and 6 days the insides of the egg change. Our problem is that because of the import, bird flu has also entered and because there is no testing, there is no testing that is happening. There is no testing when pork and beef entered that’s why bird flu has spread in Central Luzon and hit caretakers of layers making bird flu a bigger problem. The population decreased and that is why the price of eggs increased.)

When asked about his insight about the prices of the egg, So said he hopes it will be stabilized soon.

“We hope na mastablize na yung presyo dun sa presyo ng farm gate na nasa 7 ang medium size, so we hope na mastablize yun para at least hindi na sumipa pataas, pero ito syempre yung pagtaas ng presyo nakita natin, hindi ganun kabilis dahil yung mga alaga ulit ng manok magpapasok, it will take mga 5 months ulit bago mangitlog so yun yung nakikiyta nation," he continued.

(We hope that the prices are stable with the price of the farm gate which is 7 for medium size, so we hope that is stabilize so that at least it won’t increase, but of course the increase of price that we see is not that fast, because of the chicken that are coming in. It will take around 5 months before hatching, so that’s what we see.)

When asked about the price of the egg if it will not reach a holiday price, So said “Sa tingin naman natin, di naman sisipa pataas yun.”

(We think that it will not increase.)
