The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced having partnered with private companies in a move to foster the welfare of female PDLs or Persons Deprived of Liberty in Mindanao to ultimately enhance their living conditions and support their rehabilitation.

“This initiative is testament to the DOJ's bold commitment to improving the country's penal and corrections system to help PDLs reform and prepare them to reintegrate into society as better people vital for the growth of our nation,” Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla stated.

The DOJ Action Center (DOJAC), with Undersecretary-In-Charge Margarita Gutierrez at its helm, was able to secure for Remulla a tie-up with Huawei Technologies Philippines Inc. and mWell, the Metro Pacific Health Tech Corporation.

MWell issued android tablets for easy access to their “fully integrated” health application and platform through which the detainees may teleconsult, view their laboratory results, acquire medical prescriptions, and so on.

On September 18, the health corporation officially released the devices to Undersecretaries Jesse Hermogenes Andres and Gutierrez, which was to be dispensed to the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW)-Mindanao. Usec Gutierrez turned them over to the CIW-Mindanao during its Katarungan Caravan, which provided legal and medical aid in Davao del Norte.

The use of these devices will be overseen by the CIW as PDLs are not permitted access to gadgets or the internet.

Remulla thanked the partner companies for their constant participation in such endeavors.
