The Department of Justice (DOJ) has expressed its hopes of continued cooperation between the Philippines and Timor Leste in the repatriation of fugitive and former Representative Arnolfo Teves Jr., emphasizing the country’s commitment to due process as it anticipates the resolution of Teves’ cases in Timor Leste.
“This case is about delivering justice under the rule of law and ensuring that those responsible for these heinous crimes are held accountable. We continue to respect the sovereignty and legal processes of Timor Leste, but we are steadfast in our resolve to pursue justice for the victims in the Philippines,” Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said.
He appealed primarily that justice be granted to Teves' victims and their families.
Teves, who was charged with multiple murder cases locally, fled to Dili, Timor Leste and applied for political asylum. He was arrested at a golf club in March; his extradition was agreed upon on June 27.
