The Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday, Dec. 31, reported that one of the eight new fireworks-related injuries involved a 4-year-old boy, who lost his five fingers to an illegal dart bomb.

In its latest report published on its official Facebook page, DOH stated that the boy underwent amputation after he was severely injured for lighting an illegal dart bomb at their home in Central Luzon.

“The deadliest combination is an illegal firework lit at home by a very young male. We report today a new amputation involving a 4-year-old boy from Central Luzon who lost all five fingers on his right hand. His neck was also injured by the illegal Dart Bomb which he lit at home,” it said.

According to the health department, six of the new patients were injured at their homes and in the streets while two other patients were hurt in designated areas.

The patients were said to be all males and their age bracket was 4 to 37 years old.

The total number of fire-related injuries across the country jumped to 115.

“[A]lmost four out of every ten cases coming from NCR (44, 38%),” DOH said, adding that the Davao Region has the fewest cases with only 1 incident.

The health department said boga, 5-star, kwitis, piccolo, luces, pla-pla, whistle bond, and other unlabeled or imported fireworks were the top firecrackers used by patients.

“Illegal fireworks (marked with an asterisk) are to blame for about six out of every ten cases (67, 59%),” it added.
