The Department of Health (DOH) cautioned the public about influenza-like illnesses during the Amihan season, also known as the cold season, as the country’s weather bureau officially declared the start of Amihan.
In an exclusive interview with DZRH's Special on Saturday, DOH Spokesperson Asec. Albert Domingo mentioned that during periods of temperature changes, the throat and nose become more susceptible to irritation.
"Maraming mga Pilipino ang mayroong allergy at iisipin nating sinisipon pero ‘yun pala ay pangangati na ‘yung nangyayari, tinatawag na allergic reaction," Domingo said.
He further noted that there are also illnesses during this time known as influenza-like illnesses, or flu-like symptoms.
The flu-like illness includes symptoms such as cough, colds, and fever. As long as it is not dengue, leptospirosis, or another illness, it is classified as an influenza-like illness.
However, the spokesperson reported that this year, compared to the previous year, there has been a decline in the number of recorded cases.
Last year, there were 196,045 cases, but as of November 23 this year, only 161,535 cases of influenza-like illness have been recorded in the country.
Meanwhile, Domingo also reported that while the overall number of dengue cases is declining, the figures in Metro Manila continue to rise due to the series of typhoons that have hit the country.
In this regard, while dengue cases have increased in Metro Manila, the case fatality rate, or the number of Filipinos who die from dengue for every 100 cases, has decreased.
The public was still advised to exercise caution and maintain cleanliness in their surroundings to prevent the spread of such illnesses.
