The Department of Health (DOH) has warned the public about the risk of leptospirosis from exposure to floodwaters, as Typhoon Enteng continues to hit the country.
"Dahil sa malakas na ulan na dala ng bagyong si Enteng, pinaaalala po ng Department of Health (DOH) na mag-ingat sa Leptospirosis mula sa baha," DOH said in an official statement on Monday.
DOH stressed that floodwaters are dirty and should be avoided as much as possible. If an individual comes in contact with flood, it's important to wash the body with soap and water right away.
Anyone who has waded through floodwater should consult a doctor or health center within 1-2 days, even if they do not have any visible wounds or symptoms.
According to the DOH, antibiotic prophylaxis is still available, and consultations and prescriptions are free at government health centers.
The agency also reminded the public that a price freeze on medications, including Doxycycline, is still in effect in areas affected by Typhoon Carina, until September 23.
