DOE Secretary Garin confirms staggered fuel price hikes amid Middle East tensions

Department of Energy (DOE) announced that fuel prices in the Philippines are expected to rise by ₱17-18 per liter starting next week.

In an exclusive interview on DZRH Stories: Pinoy Documentaries, DOE Secretary Atty. Sharon Garin emphasized that the increase will be implemented in a staggered manner, allowing motorists to plan their expenses.

“Parang ano naman pumayag naman yung mga oil companies natin to stagger the increase… Pakonti-konti para makaplano din yung mga motorista natin, para hindi, huwag nilang hintayin na napakataas na the highest increase,” she said.

Major oil companies will announce daily price adjustments, while independent companies’ rates will be released later. Discounts for jeepney and other public utility vehicle drivers will still be provided.

The DOE secretary explained that daily price changes will continue “until the war in the Middle East is over.” Any developments in the region may lead to recalculations, ensuring prices reflect global market conditions.

Garin also warned that oil companies implementing unauthorized price hikes could face sanctions.

“I have ordered our bureau to issue a cancellation of their permit,” she stated, adding that local government units and police authorities are closely monitoring compliance.
