The Department of Energy (DOE) issued show cause orders on Monday to several gas stations in Metro Manila for failing to follow the proper fuel pricing guidelines set in the DOE’s March 6 advisory — Tuesday, March 9.
According to a report by Jecelle Ricafort, a show cause order has been issued to a gas station in Pasig City for implementing an advance price hike. Current fuel prices are reported at ₱74.50 per liter for diesel, ₱69.50 for premium gasoline, and ₱64.50 for regular gasoline.
Energy Undersecretary Felix William “Wimpy” Fuentebella read the alleged violations to the station management, giving them 24 hours to submit an explanation. Failure to comply could result in the cancellation or revocation of their Certificate of Compliance.
Separate reports indicated significant price hikes at two Quezon City stations. A station in Fairview raised diesel prices from ₱49.76 to ₱71 per liter, a 42.68% increase.
Another station in North Fairview increased diesel from ₱49.75 to ₱72 per liter, representing a 44% jump. Both stations were issued show cause orders by the DOE for allegedly implementing early price hikes.
DOE Secretary Sharon Garin previously said that several stations raised prices three times within a single week. Malacañang also reported that over 50 gasoline stations nationwide have received show cause orders.
The department clarified that show cause orders do not involve closures but they are intended to give stations a chance to explain their pricing.
The DOE also reported receiving complaints that smaller retailers had raised fuel prices three times in the past week. Details on the specific companies involved and locations of surprise inspections have not been publicly disclosed, to prevent any avoidance by station officials.
The DOE emphasized that strict monitoring and enforcement will continue. Secretary Garin warned that appropriate action will be taken against retailers taking advantage of global market fluctuations, particularly the situation in the Middle East.
