An official said Thursday that residents of a hog-raising village in Dinagat Islands province infected with African swine fever (ASF) will receive financial assistance from the provincial government.

"These affected swine raisers are confined in one area in Barangay Don Ruben in the town of San Jose," said Dr. Aimee Jimeno in an interview.

She stated that their office has so far identified 35 swine raisers affected by the ASF setback, with the town government already initiating hog depopulation.

On Wednesday, the Joint Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and Disaster Rehabilitation and Recovery Committees (DPMDRRC) approved cash assistance for affected hog raisers.

According to the recent meeting, affected residents will receive financial assistance ranging from PHP4,000 to PHP5,000, as well as PHP1,000 for piglets.

Dinagat Islands Governor Nilo Demerey Jr. issued an order in November last year temporarily prohibiting the entry of live hogs and their byproducts into the island province.

The order was issued at a time when ASF was prevalent in the neighboring province of Surigao del Norte.
