PGen. Benjamin Acorda Jr., chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), felt saddened by the issues hounding the anti-drug enforcement unit of the law enforcement agency.
Members of the PNP - Drug Enforcement Group (PDEG) have been accused of being involved in the illegal drug trade.
The allegations came following a drug raid in Tondo, Manila last October that resulted in the seizure of 990 kilograms of crystallized methamphetamine, locally known as shabu, and the arrest of PMSgt. Rodolfo Mayo Jr., a former member of PDEG.
"Bilang ama ng PNP, siya ay nasasaktan," said PCol. Jean Fajardo, spokesperson of the PNP, said on Wednesday, May 17, during DILG sa DZRH Breaktime.
Fajardo stressed that integrity enhancement, which includes internal cleansing, within the PNP remains among the priorities under the leadership of Acorda.
The PNP official assured that rogue cops would face criminal and administrative charges.
Aside from internal cleansing, she shared that PNP reviews existing policies and operational procedures, particularly on operations against illegal drugs, to prevent operatives from committing lapses or misdemeanors.
Fajardo also revealed the possibility that PNP will dissolve PDEG based on the results of the ongoing review.
"Hindi natin basta-basta pwedeng i-deactivate ang isang unit dahil may mga kaakibat iyan mga responsibilidad," Fajardo stressed.
"Kung ano ang magiging recommendation ng PNP, iyan naman ay i-forward sa (National Police Commission) for review and assessment kung feasible ba na i-deactivate ang special operation units ng PNP-Drug Enforcement Group," she added.
