The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla will appear before the Commission on Appointments (CA) on Wednesday, November 20 for his confirmation as DILG chief.
CA Assistant Minority Leader and Surigao del Sur 2nd district Rep. Johnny Pimentel cited that Remulla has a “high chance” of being confirmed on the spot. He said that the DILG Chief needs to focus on preparing for the upcoming campaign period, as the 2025 mid-term elections are only six months away.
Pimentel emphasized the importance of the DILG’s peace and order functions, as the country is prone to “spikes in violent incidents” during election periods.
Additionally, the DILG plays a crucial role in preparations as they are closely coordinating with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and other government agencies, to ensure that minimal interruptions occur during the voting period.
The CA Committee on Interior and Local Government led by Sen. Miguel Zubiri will be discussing Remulla’s confirmation hearing scheduled at 10 AM this week.
Remulla was a long-time governor of Cavite before he was appointed DILG Secretary on October 8 this year. He succeeded Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr. who stepped down from his position to run for a senate seat in the upcoming elections.
The CA is made up of 12 members each from the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Committee is granted authority to reject and approve appointments from the President.
