During the Holy Week, more Filipinos registered their subscriber identity module (SIM) cards, which led to a total of over 62 million subscribers.
According to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) undersecretary for public affairs and foreign relations Anna Mae Yu Lamentillo, a total of 62,170,268 has been reached as more people registered their SIM cards on Good Friday.
Moreover, a total of 4,711,456 have been registered with DITO Telecommunity; 26,348,304 with Globe Telecom; and 31,110,508 with Smart Communications.
However, the number is around 36.79 percent of the total 168,977,773 SIM cards sold nationwide, as tallied by the DICT.
The Big 3 telecommunications providers, according to the department, are currently preparing for the possibility that users may rush to register on April 26, the deadline for SIM card registration.
Failure to register by the deadline will result in the deactivation of the SIM card, which will prevent it from working with phone, text, and mobile data services.
The law is a component of the government's attempts to increase national security and prevent fraud like scams and identity theft.
The deadline may, however, be extended by the government by up to 120 days.
