The first batch of Filipino evacuees have been evacuated from Khartoum, Sudan amid the ongoing deadly clashes between the Sudanese army and paramilitary forces, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Tuesday, April 25.
In a statement, DFA spokesperson Teresita Daza said there are 50 Filipino evacuees in the first batch.
From Khartoum, the group traveled by land at about 8 pm (Philippine time), and they were headed to the cities of Aswan and Cairo in Egypt, the foreign affairs official said.
A total of 696 Filipinos are registered in Sudan, according to DFA Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega on Monday.
About 150 Pinoys have expressed their desire to go home in the Philippines.
Amid the clash, three female Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), who worked for an airline in Sudan, were safely rescued and were immediately transferred to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan has killed about 427 civilians and over 3,700 others was reportedly wounded, based on the latest report from Reuters.
