The Department of Education (DepEd) intends to speed up its review of the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum, aiming to reduce subjects to allow students to focus more on their work immersion.
"If we reduce the subjects of our SHS curriculum, the students will have more time for the on-the-job training or work immersion needed by the industry so that our senior high school graduates will become more employable even if they lack work experience,” DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara said during the 2024 Regional Conference on Educational Planning in Asia.
He further stated that the agency is on the right track to reduce the core subjects of the SHS curriculum to just five or six.
DepEd officials met with academic experts to expedite the review and streamlining of the SHS program and its subjects.
The agency met with consultants from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to gather recommendations on the structure of the SHS curriculum, as well as on the content of English, Science, and Math standards and curriculum guides.
Furthermore, the department has collaborated with ADB to offer technical assistance and professional guidance to DepEd specialists in revising the curriculum.
Angara previously noted that education experts from other countries have pointed out that the country’s basic education curriculum is overcrowded.
