The Department of Education (DepEd) authorizes schools in Metro Manila and CALABARZON to suspend face-to-face classes due to the volcanic smog (vog) emitted by Taal Volcano.
According to Memorandum 46, Series of 2024, signed today by Education Secretary Sonny Angara, schools that have not been suspended by their respective local governments units (LGUs) are advised accordingly.
The Secretary stated that it is within the schools' discretion to implement distance learning strategies to ensure the health and safety of students and faculty.
Angara said that the decision to lift the suspension imposed on schools also depends on the advice of disaster response officials, such as PHIVOLCS.
Following Taal Volcano's release of dense sulfur clouds that extended as far as Metro Manila, schools in Batangas, Cavite, and Laguna were the first to suspend classes.
