The Department of Education (DepEd) announced the creation of a group to study recommendations to revert the pre-pandemic school calendar to June, with a school break schedule every April and May.

"DepEd will form a group to study this so that once we give a decision, we have a proper basis for it," DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa said on Tuesday.

Poa also pointed out that the decision on moving the school calendar to August was based on the reports that students struggle trying to go to school during the typhoon season, which runs from June to August.

He previously stated that school administrators have the power to halt in-person classes and transition to an alternate delivery mode or blended learning if the environment is not conducive to learning.

Discussion on reversion of April-May summer vacation started after Senator Sherwin 'Win' Gatchalian pushes restoring the original academic calendar due to the fire and earthquake drill incident at two high schools Gulod National High School-Mamatid Extension in Cabuyao City, Laguna which led to the hospitalization of more than 100 high school students.

During the peak of the pandemic in 2020, the academic schedule and activities of the schools were altered.

The academic year began in August rather than June and ended in April.
