The Department of Education (DepEd) on Sunday announced that face-to-face classes shall be shifted to asynchronous classes or distance learning in all public schools nationwide from April 29 to April 30.
In an advisory, DepEd attributes the suspension to the high heat index forecasted by the state weather bureau and the nationwide transport strike spearheaded by transport group PISTON and progressive groups.
“Likewise, teaching and non-teaching personnel in all public schools shall not be required to report to their respective stations,” it noted.
The education department, however, allows scheduled school-level programs or activities organized by regional and school division offices on April 29 and April 30 to proceed, “provided that measures for the safety of all participants have been carefully considered.”
DepEd leaves the suspension of face-to-face classes in private schools to their heads.

Based on PAGASA’s two-day forecast, at least 32 areas are likely to experience a 42°C to 46°C heat index on April 29.
The highest heat index of 46°C is predicted to be felt in Aparri, Cagayan.
The nationwide transport strike, meanwhile, will run for three days, from April 29 to May 1, Labor Day.
The tigil pasada aimed to protest against the national government's April 30 deadline for individual franchise holders to consolidate and join cooperatives as required under the public utility vehicle modernization program.
