The Department of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday, Feb 14, issued an order amending the Panatang Makabayan.
Under the DepEd Order No. 004, certain terminology 'nagdarasal' was replaced by 'nananalangin'.
According to the Linguistic Society of the Philippines, the proposal was more 'well-written and sufficiently rationalized'.
Likewise, the Pambansang Samahan sa Linggwistika at Literaturang Filipino also agreed, noting that it is 'more inclusive, more solemn, and the choice for nananalangin is well thought of and extensively researched'.
"With these consultations, Office of the Undersecretary for Curriculum and Teaching (OUCT) recommended that nananalangin be used instead of nagdarasal primarily because the nananalangin is inherent and integral in Filipino identities as it is rooted in Tagalog," it read.
The amended Panatang Makabagan is as follow:
Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas,
aking lupang sinilangan
tahanan ng aking lahi;
kinukupkop ako at tinutulungang
maging malakas, masipag at marangal.
Dahil mahal ko ang Pilipinas,
diringgin ko ang payo
ng aking mga magalang,
susundin ko ang tuntunin ng paaralan,
tutuparin ko ang tungkulin
ng mamamayang makabayan;
naglilingkod, nag-aaral, at nananalangin
nang buong katapatan.
Iaalay ko ang aking buhay,
pangarap, pagsisikap
sa bansang Pilipinas.
Panatang Makabayan is recited during the flag-raising ceremony, class, and as part of the daily school activity program in both public and private schools, including DepEd offices.
